COMMERCIAL AVIAT ION
pean operators, according to the Inter-
national Air Transport Association (IATA).
The fragmented European airspace costs
the industry on two fronts—the under
used avionics installed on most modern
aircraft and the lack of harmonization
between airspace blocks.
Today, the costs of European air trafc
control are about $1,050 (€815) a fight
compared with circa $600 (€464) in the
United States! According to IATA, of the
$17.7 billion (€13 billion) paid by airlines
to European air trafc control each year,
about $4 billion (€7 billion) is wasted in
inefciency. On average, a fight is 12%
longer than it needs to be, IATA says.
“The world is becoming increasingly
global,”
insists Kallas.
“This is especially
visible in the developments in air transport.
We in the EU are convinced that working
towards cross-border and global solutions
is benefcial for everybody.”
But more positive steps are being
made. Following the frst meeting of the
EC-Turkey Aviation Dialogue in Istanbul
on 19-20 April 2012, the SESAR pro-
gramme is now also looking forward to
intensifying its relations with the Turkish
aviation authorities, therefore ofering
both sides with an unlimited and fully
connected airspace.
Acabando com as fronteiras
“A ideia principal de um Céu Único
Europeu é ter uma rede de rotas aéreas
que seja baseada em fuxos de tráfego e
não em fronteiras nacionais”
declarou
Razvan Bucuroiu, diretor da Unidade de
Planejamento de Operações do Euro-
control. As iniciativas de modernização
do espaço aéreo, ou SESAR, poderiam
gerar grandes benefícios fnanceiros e
operacionais para os operadores euro-
peus, de acordo com a International Air
Transport Association (IATA). O fragmen-
tado espaço aéreo europeu tem dois
custos para a indústria - os aviônicos
subutilizados instalados nas aeronaves
mais modernas e a falta de harmoniza-
ção entre os setores do espaço aéreo.
Hoje, os custos do controle do espa
ço aéreo europeu são de aproximada-
mente US$1,050 por voo, enquanto
custa US$600 nos EUA ! Segundo a IATA,
dos US$17,7 bilhões pagos pelas com-
panhias aéreas ao controle de tráfego
aéreo europeu a cada ano, cerca de
US$4 bilhões são desperdiçados devido
a inefciência. Em média, um voo é 12 %
mais longo do que ele precisaria ser, diz
a IATA.
“O mundo está se tornando cada
vez mais global”,
insiste Kallas.
“Isto é

2020-2030 MARKET OUTLOOK
Boeing’s market outlook — which is akin
to Airbus’ or Embraer ’s own figures —
estimates that there exists a requirement
for 11,450 new airliners in the leading
Asia-Pacific region for the 2010-2030
timel ine, as traffic expands by an ave-
rage 6.7% each year. These figures
are huge, boding wel l for the aviation
industry in the US and in Europe, where
the main suppl iers are based. Air cargo
growth wil l also be very significant in the
region, as main haul ing capacity shifts
from the West to the East making the
Asia-Pacific region the new centre of the
world. This sole air transpor t market is
tentatively wor th $1.5 tri l l ion ! But it can
only become a vivid real ity if the soon
to appear new and more environment-
friendly aircraft operate under a refined
and highly efficient ATM system, that is
why IATA and the ASEAN Transpor tation
Working Group are keeping a close look at
SESAR in Europe and Nex tGen in the USA
to find both an inspiration and, above al l,
a time-saving model.
