Refecting the impor-
tance of the Huygens lan-
ding site, it was to be christened, in March 2007, the Hubert
Curien Memorial Station; this time in memory of the late pre-
sident of the European Space Agency, deceased in 2005, a for-
mer Minister of Scientifc Research of France who devoted forty
years of his life to the promotion of space industry.
A joint project of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the Eu-
ropean Space Agency (ESA) and the Agenzia Spaziale Italiana
(ASI), the Cassini-Huygens exploration chapter has proved a
truly long and very successful mission with, at the acme, the
remotest landing performed to date. Indeed, Titan is the most
distant body from Earth that has seen a space probe landing.
Titan is also the second moon in the solar system to have a
man-made object land on its surface after our Moon.

centímetros de diâmetro,
e a do centro tem quatro centímetros de diâmetro, a uma dis-
tância de cerca de 85 centímetros a partir de Huygens. Há evi-
dências de erosão na base das rochas, indicando possível ati-
vidade fuvial. A superfície é mais escura do que originalmente
esperado, consistindo de uma mistura de água e gelo de hi-
drocarboneto. Acredita-se que o “solo” visível nas imagens é a
precipitação a partir da névoa de hidrocarboneto logo acima.
Refetindo sobre a importância do local de pouso da sonda,
que era para ser batizado, em março de 2007, como Hubert
Curien Memorial Station; desta vez em memória do último
presidente da Agência Espacial Europeia, falecido em 2005, um
ex-ministro da Pesquisa Científca da França, que dedicou qua-
renta anos de sua vida à promoção da indústria espacial.
