The Mirage III in Brazil

The Mirage III were retired from the Brazilian Air Force (FAB) service on the end of 2005. After 67,000 flight hours and 33 years of service, the impressive aircraft represented a new era for the Brazilian defence and brought FAB to the supersonic age on the seventies. Leandro Maldonado looks at the fighter's history in Brazil.

The history of the Mirage III in Brazil goes back to the sixties, when the FAB elaborated a modernization program and the creation of an air space control system. In 1967 the implementation started of the SISDACTA- Sistema Integrado de Defesa Aérea e Controle de Tráfego Aéreo (Integrated Air Traffic Control and Air Defence System) and of the COMDA-Comando de Defesa Aérea (Air Defence Command).

LAAD 2009

In April 14-17, in the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, it was taken place the seventh edition of the Latin America Aero and Defence (LAAD) trade show, with a lot of prestige from the Brazilian government and also from foreign companies interested in the region's growing defense market. By the first time, the President of the Republic, Luis Inácio Lula da Silva visited the show, proving a new official view for defense matters in Brazil.
